A tooth that has already undergone Root Canal Treatment can sometimes become painful again. But does that automatically mean the previous treatment failed?
Not necessarily. Pain can return for several reasons, including persistent or recurrent infection, complex canal anatomy, an untreated canal, leakage around the restoration, new decay, a crack or fracture, or inflammation around the root.
The pattern of symptoms can provide useful clues. Does the tooth hurt when you bite? Is there swelling or tenderness? Has a gum boil appeared? Does the pain feel similar to what you experienced before treatment?
Finding the actual cause is important because the next step depends on the diagnosis. Depending on the findings, the tooth may need observation, restoration, Root Canal Retreatment or another treatment option.
A previously treated tooth does not automatically need another Root Canal Treatment—or extraction.
If your root canal-treated tooth is hurting again in Wakad, Pimple Gurav, Rahatani or nearby areas, don't assume what the problem is.
When a treated tooth hurts again, diagnosis should come before another treatment.
