Why Does Tooth Pain Come and Go? Should I Be Concerned?
Tooth pain that disappears on its own can be confusing. You may feel relieved when the pain stops—but the absence of pain does not always mean the underlying problem has disappeared.
Pain can come and go with tooth decay, sensitivity, cracks, inflammation of the dental pulp, gum problems or changes around a previously treated tooth. The pattern matters: when the pain occurs, what triggers it, how long it lasts and whether it is becoming more frequent or intense.

Sometimes a tooth may stop hurting because the triggering stimulus has disappeared. In other situations, changes within the tooth can alter how it responds to stimulation. Therefore, a temporary improvement should not automatically be interpreted as healing.

If the same tooth repeatedly hurts, becomes sensitive, hurts while biting, or develops swelling, it is worth having it evaluated—even if you are comfortable on the day of the appointment.
Pain that comes and goes is still information. The important question is why it keeps returning.
