Why Does My Tooth Hurt? Understanding the Different Causes of Tooth Pain
Tooth pain is a symptom, not a diagnosis. A painful tooth may be reacting to decay, a crack, gum problems, exposed tooth structure, an irritated nerve, or pressure from biting. Sometimes, pain felt in one tooth can even originate from another area.
The nature of the pain can provide clues. Cold sensitivity, pain while biting, spontaneous throbbing, lingering pain, or pain that comes and goes can have different causes. However, symptoms alone cannot reliably identify the underlying problem.

This is why simply taking a painkiller and waiting may not answer the most important question: What is causing the pain?
A dental evaluation may involve examining the tooth, surrounding tissues, bite and, when appropriate, dental imaging to understand what cannot be seen directly.
If tooth pain persists, returns repeatedly, becomes stronger, or is accompanied by swelling or fever, it should not be ignored.
Understanding the cause is the first step toward deciding what the tooth actually needs.
