Replacing a missing tooth should begin with an evaluation—not with choosing a treatment.
Before deciding on a dental implant, bridge or denture, several factors need to be understood. These include the condition of the gums and supporting bone, the health of neighbouring teeth, the position of the opposing tooth, the bite, available space and the number and location of missing teeth.
The reason the tooth was lost can also be relevant. Tooth loss related to decay, gum disease, trauma or other conditions may require different considerations before replacement.
A clinical examination helps determine what has changed since the tooth was lost and whether additional assessment is necessary. Depending on the situation, dental imaging may also be used to understand structures that cannot be evaluated by looking at the mouth alone.
This evaluation is important because replacing a tooth is not simply about filling an empty space. The goal is to choose an approach that is compatible with the existing oral anatomy, function and long-term needs.
The right treatment therefore begins with the right diagnosis.
