Root Canal or Extraction? When Can a Painful Tooth Still Be Saved?
A severely painful or infected tooth does not always mean extraction is necessary. In many cases, root canal treatment can help preserve the natural tooth when enough healthy tooth structure remains and the tooth can be properly restored. The immediate priority is to control pain and infection and determine the most appropriate way to treat the affected tooth.

A root canal may be considered when the dental pulp is irreversibly inflamed or infected, often because of deep decay, cracks, repeated dental treatment or trauma. If the tooth is too damaged to restore, has inadequate supporting structure, or cannot be predictably treated, extraction may be recommended. The decision should be based on the individual tooth rather than pain intensity alone.

Dr. Ashutosh Dighe, BDS, MDS – Oral Medicine & Maxillofacial Radiology, PhD Scholar, with a Fellowship in Contemporary Endodontics, provides evaluation and endodontic treatment planning at OralNest Dental Clinic, Wakad. Where appropriate, the focus is on relieving the immediate problem while preserving natural teeth whenever clinically feasible.

For patients experiencing severe tooth pain in Wakad, Pimple Gurav, Rahatani, Pimple Saudagar, Hinjawadi and surrounding Pimpri-Chinchwad, seeking timely dental care can help avoid unnecessary delay. The goal is not simply to remove a painful tooth—it is to choose the treatment that gives the tooth and patient the most predictable long-term outcome.
