Jaw Pain, Facial Pain or Toothache? When the Source of Pain May Be Different
Pain around a tooth does not always mean the tooth itself is the source. Jaw pain, facial pain, muscle-related pain, TMJ/TMD problems, sinus-related symptoms, or referred pain can sometimes feel similar to a toothache. This is why pain that persists, returns, or does not respond as expected to dental treatment deserves appropriate clinical attention.

For a patient in severe pain, the priority is timely relief and appropriate treatment, not simply waiting for symptoms to disappear. Depending on the cause, care may involve dental treatment such as root canal therapy, treatment of a cracked or infected tooth, management of TMJ or muscle-related pain, or another appropriate approach. Treating the wrong source of pain may not provide lasting relief.

Dr. Ashutosh Dighe, BDS, MDS – Oral Medicine & Maxillofacial Radiology, PhD Scholar, with a Fellowship in Contemporary Endodontics, evaluates dental, oral, jaw and facial pain at OralNest Dental Clinic, Wakad. His clinical scope brings together oral diagnosis, maxillofacial evaluation and endodontic treatment considerations when patients present with confusing or overlapping symptoms.

If you have persistent toothache, jaw pain or facial pain in Wakad, Pimple Gurav, Rahatani, Pimple Saudagar, Hinjawadi or surrounding Pimpri-Chinchwad, timely dental evaluation can help identify the likely source and guide appropriate treatment. The important question is not only “Where does it hurt?” but also “Where is the pain actually coming from?”
