Filling or Root Canal: How Is the Decision Made?

Not every cavity requires a root canal. The treatment depends mainly on how deeply the decay has affected the tooth and the condition of the dental pulp.

A dental filling may be suitable when decay is limited and the pulp remains healthy. If decay has progressed deep enough to cause irreversible pulp inflammation or infection, root canal treatment may be required to save the tooth.

Symptoms such as persistent toothache, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, pain while chewing, or swelling may indicate deeper involvement—but symptoms alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

A clinical examination, dental X-ray, and assessment of the tooth's remaining structure help determine whether a filling, root canal, crown, or another treatment is appropriate.

At OralNest Dental Clinic, Wakad, Dr. Ashutosh Dighe (BDS, MDS) provides comprehensive diagnosis and personalised treatment planning based on the condition of each tooth.
