A missing tooth may look like an isolated problem, but the teeth around it do not always remain unchanged.
When a tooth is lost, the neighbouring teeth may gradually move or tilt toward the empty space. The opposing tooth may also shift into the space over time. These changes can alter the way the upper and lower teeth meet during chewing.
The area of bone that once supported the missing tooth can also undergo gradual remodeling and reduction. How much change occurs varies from person to person and depends on factors such as the location of the missing tooth, bite, gum health and the condition of surrounding teeth.
This does not mean that every missing tooth automatically requires replacement. The important question is whether the missing tooth is affecting function, bite, surrounding teeth or the overall oral condition.
If you have lived with a missing tooth for months or years, an evaluation can help you understand what has changed—and what, if anything, needs to be done.
