Having a missing tooth for several years does not automatically mean that it is too late to replace it. However, the condition of the area may change with time.
After tooth loss, the supporting bone can gradually remodel and reduce in volume. Neighbouring teeth may also tilt or move into the space, while the opposing tooth may shift toward it. The longer a gap has been present, the more important it becomes to assess these changes before deciding on treatment.
A long-standing missing tooth may therefore require evaluation of the bone, gums, neighbouring teeth, opposing tooth and bite. In some situations, the available space may also need to be assessed before replacement.
This does not mean that an old missing tooth cannot be treated. It means that treatment planning should begin with understanding the current condition, rather than simply considering how long the tooth has been missing.
If you have lived with a missing tooth for years, a clinical evaluation can help determine what has changed and which replacement options may be appropriate for you.
